In 1885 Chinese laborers were brought to North America to build the railroads. The triads came with them. Caught up in the clashes, Tiger Chang manages to send a letter home about an incredible discovery. 128 years later… Phil Hardy just wants everyone to leave him alone. That way no one gets hurt. Running from his past, he thinks he has found the peace he’s seeking on the cliffs looking out over the shores of Lake Superior. Dragon Chang is following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, in search of his discovery. The young triad leader will use all his available resources, including the killing skills he learned on the opium smuggling routes in China, to locate and secure his future. Local police officer April Harrison has a handle on everything going on in her community, except her abusive ex-husband. Everything goes sideways when she starts asking questions about who is hanging around the old ghost town of Jackfish and the past begins to catches up with the present in more ways than one.

Jackfish Reborn Rejean Giguere Books

Hyperviolent story -- mayhem and murder, cover to cover. If that's your dish, then you might like this one.

Characters are reasonably well thought out and the interactions come across as moderately believable. The loose ends are a bit mystifying, but maybe that's par for this genre. For example, a mistaken murder of a trucker at a truck stop has no consequences. The trail of hacked and blasted bodies apparently cause no alarm among the larger population or the authorities. Seems doubtful....

The plot is pretty contrived, I thought. Surely there are Chinese gangsters; surely they can be violent. But searching for hidden treasure in the Canadian shield? And finding it after more than a century, marked by stacked logs and branches?? Don't really think so....

The writing is okay, but there are some clunkers: "...screaming, crawling or stumbling away from the viscous [sic] attack." Must have been some fun to watch!

Jackfish Reborn Rejean Giguere Books Reviews

If you love suspense and adventure then you'll love this book, it kept my attention from start to finish.
The story is quick, insightful, fun to read.
Readers are drawn into the action thanks to the engaging writing plenty of details.
Also characters are interesting and compelling. Their emotions are so tangible that as you read you can actually feel like you are right there in the midst of their chaos.
The multiple threads of the well-developed plot line were easy to follow, the reading was very smooth and the story line flowed wonderfully.
I will definitely follow this author.
A young Chinese Triad leader, Dragon Chang, travels to the small Canadian town of Jackfish to solve a riddle written on a scrap of paper and left to him by his great grandfather. He believes the riddle points to great wealth.

I enjoyed this fast paced, action-packed read. The story is woven of three distinct threads.

1.The Chinese mafia who want the treasure left by Dragon’s great grandpa and will stop at nothing to attain it.

2.A lone wolf, Phil Hardy, who has set up camp on a remote cliff, which just happens to overlook the treasure’s hiding place. Phil’s isolation is a self-imposed therapy while he strives to escape a haunted past life as a Toronto police officer who was involved in a deadly gunfight (also with Chinese mafia). Phil suffers flashbacks when he’s under stress, mostly triggered by his guilt - he blames himself for the death of two undercover operatives.

3.April Harrison the local police officer. Jackfish is within her territory. April was a likeable character, and I strongly associated with her as a similar to the policewoman played by Francis McDormand in the Coen brothers’ movie, Fargo. She’s independent, capable, and although out of her depth when faced with murderous gangsters, manages just fine on a solid diet of common sense.

The first few chapters give backstory that explains how the treasure came to be in Jackfish. I’m not much of a ‘back story’ kinda guy, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading how Dragon’s great grandpa marshalled the Chinese workers as they built the railroad that skirted the banks of Lake Superior.

The plot is often driven by misunderstandings and this is nicely conveyed by the way the author switches between the threads giving different viewpoints of the same events. For example, when the Chinese arrive in Phil Hardy’s vicinity, he assumes they’re here to take revenge on him. The Chinese assume he’s after the treasure. April gets involved just because she wants to know why these strangers are in her district, and even to the end has no inkling about the treasure, or who the gangsters really are.

A number of interesting side stories involving cougars, bears, and drunks mesh the plot together and add to the richness. The writing is sharp, but it could benefit from an editor. Not for proofing, but just to straighten out some minor point of view slips that kicked me out of the story on occasions.

Read it because story was in Michigan. It did not dissapoint. Interesting take on early history of railroad building living for the Chinese.
I liked the fast pace of the action tempered with good character development of the main characters. Background history of the characters was well handled and merged smoothly into the present day action. The background gave depth and realism to the action, even engendering some sympathy for the 'bad' guys as they lived out their destiny. It is quite a feat to tie together the diverse stories (time, geography and culture) and run them into a current fast paced thrilling story. With some personal exposure to this area of the world the locale seemed well rendered. I'm not quite as confident about the realism of the quick animal bonding and resultant paybacks but it sure made for several exciting scenes. Overall a great story and I went on to look up Endpoint one of the authors other books.
If I could write a book it would end up being exactly like this one. Jackfish Reborn is everything, and more, that I look for in a good adventure/action story. The story grabs you and pulls you in right from the start as you begin to dive into the past/present clash going on. The author has done a really good job describing the characters and making them believable which is a difficult task in this genre of book. Even the setting where the action sequences are taking place have enough body to them that you can almost imagine yourself there watching the drama unfold in person. Rejean Giguere has given us a very well written story that gives twists and turns as it roller-coasters it's way through your mind. It doesn't look as though this book will turn into a series and that's too bad as it has the depth to carry on into a couple more books. I will just have to stick the author's other book, Endpoint, and keep an eye out for more.
