Everett Leon Kincaid Jr.-E. Leon-was not perfect. But, then again, he never claimed to be. He didn't have time. He was too busy trying to earn a living as a traveling advertising salesman and be the best dad possible to his five sons. Those were his priorities, not perfection. Leon's goal of being a good dad stemmed from the troubled relationship he had with his own father. Leon swore that he would never treat his own children the way his father treated him. He lived up to that goal with his five sons, using a combination of common sense advice and humor. His common sense usually came in the form of sayings, including "Money's never an issue, as long as you have some of it," "There is a fine line between being 'in the groove' and being 'in the rut,'" and "Don't ever get old. It's not all it's cracked up to be." Leon taught his sons how to drive, how to defend themselves, how to deal with people, how to compete, how to play baseball and other sports, and, in the process, how to be good dads themselves.

E. Leon A Perfectly Imperfect Dad Paul Kincaid 9780692787922 Books Reviews
This book is a treasure. What a great reminder of how the advertising sales industry used to be and how those fine people balanced work, travel and family without any help from technology.
Kincaid has written a poignant remembrance of his dad that will speak to the hearts of fathers and sons everywhere. Fathers will hope that their grown sons remember their lives together this way, and sons will recognize the everyday experiences that made their dads a lasting influence they came to cherish.
The book has a sweet toughness to it, conveying the love and trspect that fathers and sons hold for each other but are seldom able to
put in words. A great gift for Father's Day.
As Father’s Day approaches, a son’s thoughts invariably turn toward his dad. This book, one son’s tribute to his dad, is a nostalgic look at a bygone era, when a father’s lessons were transmitted while driving, at ball games and at the dinner table – not Facebook or Twitter. I enjoyed the humorous life-lessons shared in the book as well as the topical organization, which made for a quick read, almost like a collection of short stories. I could not help but reflect on my own upbringing and relationship with my dad while reading this book, but I supposed that’s the point after all. Highly recommended.
What a truly enjoyable read! Much more than a well deserved tribute to an extraordinary man, Mr. Kincaid weaves a masterful family tale that invites you into the trials and triumphs of a nearly single handed raising of five boys in 1960's-70's Middle America. The realities and memories are crystal clear, well presented and touching, bringing one back to a sense of home, family, brotherly bonds and the importance of relationships on all levels. With the wit, humor and steadfast philosophies of "E. Leon" ringing true as lessons learned and to be learned, this is a must read for young and old alike.
I came across this book and thought I would merely skim a few pages--and then read it in its entirety. It is more than one man's memories of his father. It is an insightful story that highlights a great number of factors that made this father-son relationship successful. Usually, when we read about a stranger's life, it is because that person attracted the attention of the writer because of financial success. The tales of the rich man's life are built around the journey to greatness measured in dollars. Mr. Kincaid was never a wealthy man, but his son tells a story about a highly successful man using non-monetary measuring sticks. I would recommend this book to any father or son, especially if you want to be a BETTER father or son.
GREAT READ! I was sorry that E. Leon A Perfectly Imperfect Dad ended. This is a great story as written through the eyes of one of his five sons. I found the book both informative and entertaining and highly recommend it. I wish there were more like it. If you want to know about growing up during the depression and raising a family in the mid west mid 20th century this is the book. While a beautiful chronicle of a father, this book is more than that. It is an honest, clear and straightforward journey through a father’s life as a traveling farm publications salesmen while holding on to his family and dialing in on raising four sons. I'm grateful the author wrote it as he did because while personal it is very description of family life, and how to be a parent and the valuable lessons learned. It as not an easy or difficult life, but it was hard. The book provides a wonderful depiction of what life must have really been like in the mid-west, especially for the family’s bread winner and balancing both the financial provisions for the family, while also guiding his sons through their youth. E. Leon Kincaid's goal was for his sons to "achieve more than he had, to be more educated than he was, and to be more tolerant than him.....and avoid some of the errors he made and bad habits he developed." More important, he wanted them to "group up to be independent men" and have "the courage to do the right thing personally and professionally." What awesome lessons for parents and their children today. So glad to have read this book....and that the author wrote about a man with lots of common sense advice and the strength to share it on a near daily basis.
