the whole time i was reading this book, i felt like it was just building up to something, and taking its own sweet time doing it. bouncing around from an incident in 1996 to the then-present day (2012), making links that really didn't work for me. skeleton man with chattering teeth. i should have read those one star ratings before i made my 'purchase' (free at the time), i should have quit reading when i first decided that i wasn't enjoying it at all. i kept trying to wait for it to get better, but that never happened for me. the character development, which some commenters said was good, was lacking for me. by the time i felt like anything was really happening, i was within the last 5-10% of the book.it was all just developmental for the series. and i suppose that's fine, but a book should be able to stand alone and still be good, even if it is leading up to further developments in later books. (see Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas series, those books stand alone. quite well.) by the time i got to the end and the invitation to look for #2 and #3 in the series, i was done.

314 Widowsfield Trilogy Book 1 eBook AR Wise Reviews
Alma Harper grew up with no memory of the events of 16 years ago, the day every other person in Widowsfield diied at 314. When a documentary film crew want Alma to join them to uncover this mystery, this may be Alma's best chance to discover what happened during that time her memories got taken from her. But perhaps some memories are best forgotten.

This book started off with a very creepy introduction, but could not maintain the thrill factor. The author wrote this story in a jumpy style, bouncing from 1996 to 2012 on a regular basis, making it difficult to keep the events in order in my head. The plot is a good one, with a unique antagonist, the Skeleton Man, who had the town's children killing their parents. The other characters in the book, however, were much more stereotypical and difficult for the reader to develop feelings for. The pace of the story was jerky, with several sections that could have been shortened, if not entirely removed, without taking anything away from the story.

This is the first book in the Widowsfield Trilogy, and the story itself is intriguing enough that I will read the second book. However, if the flow of the second book matches the first, the finale of the series will go unread.
I am a horror novel newb. I used to enjoy every single horror movie that came out and that was a fun time. Then every movie became about demons and I don't mess around with that. In the interest of branching out into the world of horror novels I admittedly went to the free section because I don't like paying for something I don't like. I begrudging paid for the remaining two books of this trilogy because I'm a sucker for closure.
As a mom, the first part of this book was terrifying (I'm assuming that that is what a horror novelist is going for so go A. R. Wise!). It was vivid, gruesome and I felt like I was living in this book. I was scared. Luckily there is a back and forth with the past and present parts of this novel and the second part just has a lot more chill.
This is where I won't give more than three stars. The "past" started out very tense. I mean the horror was real. The "present" was weird and confusing. Throughout the novel I started to get the impression that the actual graphic description of the alternate universe (past) was gore for gore's sake. It wasn't necessary. Without the graphic detail the tension still could have been there. I started skipping these sequences at some point because they weren't necessary in the overall story being told.
Once you start to realize what is going on and the alternate reality aspect goes away and things become present it really gets interesting. It was still just so almighty confusing. You figure out what the "past" was all about. The actual historical event is revealed and it is a bit (lot) underwhelming but it sets up the "to be continued" beautifully. Because in the end ... well no spoilers. I was left with a desire to read the next book in the hopes that I could learn more about the current events in this town.
I would totally recommend this book to a newcomer in the genre because if you can get through the actual fear of the first couple of chapters and put up with the just plain gore of the rest you're going to go far.
Added bonus no demons and stuff.
I really did want to like this book. It was a really great idea for a story! But I couldn't get past the following, and it really ruined it for me
1. The conversations between people got to be too long. tedious, teenager-ish, and sometimes had nothing to do with what was happening.
2. I couldn't really understand the story, though maybe that was the point because,
3. it was "to be continued".
I stuck with it though, because I really wanted to find out what happens in the end! But, see number 4. It just wasn't enough of a cliffhanger for me to want to read a second book, if there is one.
This was one of the worst booksI've read in years. Murder, gore, mystery is my favorite genre, so I had high hopes for this book. The subject matter, creating a story around "314" interested me. that is why I was so disappointed that this book and story were so horrible. The gore and cursing didn't phase me in the least, but the story was bad. The time shifts were very annoying ,especially when the characters are appearing to be in the same place at different times. The author states why he does this, but it still makes little sense. Now I see there are two more books! I ordered this because it was free and I love to see what comes out of new writers. I wouldn't pay one cent for any book that follows this one.
This appears to be the beginning of another series. Mr. Wise is a great writer.(I loved the Deadlocked series) BUT-- This book doesn't tell a complete story, it's just an opener for future books in a series. 99% of this book was character development and story set up. The 1% of real action seemed like an afterthought. I was very much invested in the characters but there was no payoff in the end. ARGH!!!
