1860s London a period of discovery, competing ideas and rigid social hierarchy. When Alice Heapy, an unusual and artistic young milliner, daringly sets up her own business, the mother of John Motton, eminent phrenologist, is amongst the first of her bourgeois and eccentric clients. Alice is intrigued by the phrenologist's belief that he can determine his clients' character and moral capacity by
measuring their heads, whilst Motton is astonished at the power Alice's poetic hats exert on the lives of his mother and her peculiar friends. But under each other's exacting and increasingly hostile gaze, Alice and Motton begin to
reveal—and, in desperation, attempt to conceal—their own characters.

As Alice and Motton play out the ferocious Victorian tensions between social classes, men and women, science and art, faith and reason—tensions which continue to challenge us—we are drawn into the sensuous imagery and subtle humour of this sharply observed drama, eager to know where it will lead. A highly original and visual novel, brimming with delicious wit, The Milliner and the Phrenologist is a remarkable debut from Kay Syrad.

Kay Syrad is a lecturer and freelance writer, often working with visual artists. Her poetry has been published in a wide range of journals and anthologies. She is particularly interested in the nature of perception, which she explores in her poetry publication Objects of Colour Baltic Coast, in collaboration with photographer, Gina Glover. She is also co-author of a Thames & Hudson monograph, Silent Spaces, on the artist Chris Drury. She lives in East Sussex.

The Milliner and the Phrenologist edition by Kay Syrad Literature Fiction eBooks

With compelling, beautiful language, Kay Syrad has evoked an image of 19th century London that is both historically fascinating and emotionally fantastical. The age of the dawning of Darwin was also a time when phrenology was a popular phenomenon, and the way Syrad interweaves these two threads while simultaneously offering a plot of romance and conflict is simply enchanting. The characters are unforgettable, and I will never think about a hat in the same way again!

Alice Heapy makes is an exceptional milliner. Her hats bringing new perspective to wearers' lives. Doctor John Motton is no ordinary phrenologist. As a child, he displayed alarming propensities in the shape of his skull.

When Alice Heapy makes a hat for Doctor John Motton's mother, the phrenologist is mystified by the effect of her new headwear. He seeks to classify Alice, to understand her innate perceptions, and to dissect her character according to strictures of his profession.

From a life of hardship and poverty, Alice is initially drawn to Doctor John Motton, attracted by his masculinity and his strange new ideas. But as Alice explores the 'science' of phrenology, she begins to realize its fearsome constraints and to understand that Doctor John Motton's life is not what it seems.

As Doctor Motton presses Alice towards having a delineation, her mind begins to unravel, her creativity at odds with the probing nature of his profession. Her defiance raises ethical and professional doubts in John Motton. He is at last forced to confront his fearful propensities, with devastating consequence.

In The Milliner and the Phrenologist, Kay Syrad paints nineteenth century London in vivid detail, immersing us in an era of rapid progress, social change, and revolutionary ideas. This is not an easy book, or a light summer read. But the juxtaposition of milliner and phrenologist is quirky. Syrad's narrative voice lyrical and compelling. It would be a great choice for a book group - guaranteed to provoke avid discussion between readers.
